Factors affecting service life of crucible in induction melting furnace

The quality and service life of the crucible are closely related to the product quality and smelting cost. Improving the quality and service life of crucible is one of the main technical problems in induction furnace smelting.

The factors that affect the service life of crucible are very complex. The main factors are as follows.

1. Characteristics of crucible material

The chemical composition, physical and chemical characteristics of crucible material have great influence on the service life of crucible.

Impurities in refractories can form compounds with low melting point at high temperature, thus reducing the refractoriness of refractories. With the increase of impurity content in refractory, the refractoriness decreases and the service life of crucible decreases. In order to prolong the service life of the crucible, the higher the purity of the refractory, the better.

2. Crucible capacity:

The service life of induction furnace crucible decreases with the increase of its capacity.

The relationship between crucible capacity and service life is based on the following reasons: with the increase of crucible capacity, the static pressure of molten metal on the crucible wall increases. The larger the capacity of the crucible, the stronger the static pressure on the crucible wall. Therefore, the molten metal in the large induction furnace is easier to penetrate into the crucible wall, and the crucible will be destroyed quickly.

In order to improve the service life of the crucible, the thickness of the crucible wall should be increased appropriately. However, with the increase of crucible wall thickness, the resistance value increases, the reactive power loss increases and the electrical efficiency decreases. Therefore, the thickness of crucible wall is limited in a certain range. Therefore, it is necessary to select a reasonable wall thickness to ensure both high electrical efficiency and service life of the crucible.

3. Working condition of Crucible:

Continuous smelting and intermittent smelting have great influence on the service life of crucible. In continuous smelting, the crucible is always in the hot state, which is less affected by the drastic change of temperature. During intermittent operation, the crucible changes from low temperature to high temperature to low temperature periodically. As a result of this rapid cooling and heating change, cracks will appear, which will reduce the life of the crucible.
