Comparison of IGBT and SCR induction melting furnace

Thyristor rectifier is also called thyristor. It is a kind of high-power semiconductor device with three PN junctions and four layer structure. It is generally connected by two thyristors in reverse. Its function is not only to rectify, but also can be used as a contactless switch to quickly connect or cut off the circuit, to realize the inversion of changing DC into AC, to change one frequency of AC into another frequency of AC, and so on. Thyristor has the advantages of small volume, high efficiency, good stability and reliable operation. It is mainly used for controllable rectification, inverter, frequency conversion, voltage regulation, contactless switch, etc. Silicon controlled devices are widely used in the industrial control of household appliances, such as dimming lamps, speed regulating fans, air conditioners, televisions, refrigerators, washing machines, cameras, combined audio, acousto-optic circuits, timing controllers, toy devices, radio remote controls, cameras and induction furnaces.

IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) is a composite fully controlled voltage driven power semiconductor device composed of BJT (bipolar transistor) and MOS (insulated gate field effect transistor). It has the advantages of high input impedance of MOSFET and low on-off voltage drop of GTR. The results show that the saturation voltage of GTR decreases, the current density is high, but the driving current is large; the driving power of MOSFET is small, the switching speed is fast, but the conduction voltage drop is large, and the current density is small. IGBT combines the advantages of the above two devices, with low driving power and low saturation voltage. It is very suitable for DC voltage of 600V and above converter system, such as AC motor, inverter, switching power supply, lighting circuit, traction drive and other fields.

Compared with thyristor, IGBT has its own advantages. The former can control on-off components, while most of the latter can only control on, not off (now there are thyristors that can be turned off). Affected by the manufacturing process and working principle of the components, the former can work at a higher frequency (up to about 25kHz), while the latter is mostly within 5KHz, which is the advantage of the former over the latter. However, the disadvantages of the former are high cost and complex manufacturing process. In the manufacturing of high voltage and high current components, it can not reach the ability of SCR, and its anti overload ability is far less than that of SCR. However, with the progress of manufacturing technology and the improvement of short-circuit protection, the former has greatly reduced the cost of components. Compared with SCR, the price is completely acceptable in many occasions. Moreover, due to the flexible and convenient control, it can cancel the turn-off circuit of SCR circuit, which can completely replace SCR in many occasions with better performance. So now many induction furnace equipment which used to use silicon controlled rectifier gradually use IGBT instead of if to judge IGBT or silicon controlled rectifier.
