Compared with cupola, using induction melting furnace to melt molten iron can not only reduce environmental pollution, but also be conducive to the quality control of molten iron with less investment. It is also convenient to produce ductile iron, vermicular iron, gray iron and other kinds of cast iron with multiple grades. The production mode is very flexible. Compared with the melting with pig iron as the main ingredient, the cost of molten iron can be reduced by 1000 yuan by using scrap steel carburizing process. The medium frequency electric furnace can realize self fault diagnosis and protection, reduce maintenance time and workload. It can be connected with automatic control and management system of computer smelting process, and is easy to operate and manage. Therefore, after the 1990s, most of the foreign and new cast iron foundries in China used coreless medium frequency induction furnace to melt molten iron.

When molten iron is melted in medium frequency induction furnace, the quality of molten iron can be significantly improved and the energy consumption per ton of molten iron can be reduced by using the recycled material after crushing and shot blasting. Our company has done production test on 10t medium frequency furnace, using clean recycled charge to produce high-power diesel engine cylinder head, casting porosity waste rate reduced by 6%, molten iron smelting power consumption reduced by 90kwh / T; at the same time, it can effectively reduce the labor intensity of workers' slagging, improve the casting and smelting operation environment, reduce the slagging phenomenon of power frequency furnace mouth, and solve the problem of refractory slagging after furnace mouth slagging The service life of power frequency furnace lining can be increased by 20% and smelting production efficiency can be improved. Therefore, when using medium frequency induction furnace to smelt molten iron, we should attach great importance to the purification of burden, especially the crushing and shot blasting treatment of return burden, which is a very important link to give play to the smelting efficiency of induction furnace.

Medium frequency induction furnace melting molten iron can also produce excellent processing performance of gray iron cylinder, cylinder head. The influence of melting furnace type on the machinability of gray cast iron has been debated for many years, that is, most foundry people think that the machinability of gray cast iron produced by induction furnace melting is worse than that produced by cupola melting. In 1998, the American Foundry Association organized researchers to study the influence of induction furnace melting and cupola melting on the machinability of gray cast iron (equivalent to HT150, HT200 and HT250) by turning and drilling. The results show that the machinability of materials melted in cupola is not better than that melted in induction furnace, but for some machinability data, the machinability of gray cast iron melted in induction furnace is better. Our company has also studied the machinability of gray iron castings produced by induction furnace melting, and verified it on the mass production of HT250 cylinder block: the machinability of cylinder block produced by medium frequency induction furnace is 20% higher than that produced by hot blast cupola and electric furnace duplex melting, and the mechanical properties of castings are 10% higher than that produced by hot blast cupola and electric furnace duplex melting, and the microstructure is improved The key is to adopt good melting process, scrap carburizing process, high quality carburizing agent and good inoculation process.
